0:00 Lightning is more than nature's fireworks display. Research has shown
0:05 that lightning is an excellent early warning indicator for approaching severe
0:08 storms and the development of tornadoes.This data visualization shows actual
0:13 lightning measurements captured by a remarkable array of ground-based
0:16 lightning detectors capable of tracing how lightning propagates through the
0:20 atmosphere.
0:22 From space, the intersection of lightning and its corresponding cloud fronts
0:26 becomes clear. That's why on the nation's new environmental satellite,
0:30 called GOES-R, an advanced lightning mapper known as GLM and will survey 
0:35 much of the Western Hemisphere for atmospheric flashes. According to GOES-R
0:39 scientists this technology could help provide critical minutes of
0:43 valuable warning time in advance of approaching severe storms.
